Sleep and my 5 yr old

I can' t seem to get my 5 yr to sleep early at night. He has supper before 17:30, i bath him at 7, put him to bed by 8. I read him a bed time story, switch off the light and lay with him for a little while. If i get out of the bed, he follows me. He does not sleep during the day at creche. What can i do?

This is very common especially with intelligent children. You have a good routine and he seems to be going to bed at the right time. Do not read very exciting stories to him as his imagination will go into top gear and he will think about the story.Winnie the Pooh and similar stories are ideal. The house must be quiet and calm at night when he goes to sleep and the TV must not be on loud.Be careful not to give him any food or drink that may keep him awake such as anything containing caffeine. Another stimulant is theobromine which is found in chocolate. Use a night light in his room if he seems to be afraid of being on his own in the dark.If he follows you out of the room take him back to his bed immedaitely.
