Hi Doc

I am trying to get my 16 month old to sleep through the night. He sleeps with me as I have only one bedroom and there is no other place to put his cot. I have tried the controlled sleep training and left him to cry but he cries so badly that he begins to cough and vomit and the next day he wheezes. I have tried 3 times but it does work. He hasn' t slept through the night since birth he awakes 2 - 3 times a night for his bottle and I have tried water but he gets angry starts to cry I just ignore him then he get sick.

What do I do doc. I have bags under my eyes from lack of sleep and I know that the only solution is to put him in his own room but unfortunately I cant afford a bigger place right now. And he also eat well drinks well (3x260ml nido) he weighs 10.56kg he is generally a happy baby. He also goes to creche and sleeps between 12 &  2pm.

I have also given him panado and vidol for his teething, no help I assumed his gums was sore.

Please help with some solution.

The problem as you have mentioned here is that your baby is in the same room as you.He knows that you are there and all he has to to to get an audience is to start crying and you will appear-and you also have a bottle each time.It is going to be difficult to solve this problem. You need to try and train him to have only one bottle at first. After one bottle the next time he cries it will have to be the controlled crying method even if he performs and screams the place down. Each time increase the time between cries before going to him but do not offer another bottle. You may need two or three nights to get this right but if you are determined and do not give in you will succeed.

This might be a silly suggestion, but why don' t you sleep on the couch a couple of night to make you baby think that he' s in his own room until the controlled crying method kicks in??? just a thought....
