Q.

Sick 3 year old

My son is 3 years old. He had his tonsils taken out when he was 1 and a half years old. Since then he has not been sick, except for the common cold now and then.

The last two weeks, he has been so sick, flu symptons, the doctor said that he had tonsilitis, the other doctor said that he had just a bad flu, the other doctor said that he has got something wrong with his immune system and we should get him to get a full blood count test done to see if all is in order.

He is also terribly thin. We can literally see every bone in his body. He eats very well though. At school, he eats three meals a day, and then when he gets home, he eats at least twice before going to bed. He is very pale.

What could it be that is wrong with my son. I am so worried about him... We have now taken him to 3 different doctors and they all say something different. I just dont know what to do anymore. Please advise.

Thank you...

Paediatrician

It is very difficult to be sure what is happening here without being able to examine your son. This is obviously not just the flu as he would be better by now. He appears to be losing weight and is ill and is pale. There could be many reasons for this particularly illnesses such as glandular fever or TB. He needs to be seen by a paediatrician who will make a proper diagnosis. I see that you have already taken him to 3 doctors, but you really need someone who is going to find out what is wrong with your son. If you write in again and tell me in which city you live I will recommend someone.

Dear Nats, I can so identify with you...My son is also 3 years old....He had scarlet fever 1yr ago, but since then had been very pale and swollen lymph nodes in his neck. They did bloodtests, first there was something wrong...dewormed him, second blood tests were all fine. Since 2 months ago he started losing weight, lost almost 3 kg in 2 months!!! Had him at 3 dr's, all say his fine. I get so much critisism for being worried, because all the dr's say his fine. He also have a cough that comes and go, and runny nose the last 2 weeks. I'm still very worried, WHY IS HE LOSING WEIGHT? I'm thinking of you...Please let me know, how your son is doing.
