Q.

Severe Constipation - 5months old?

Dear Doc,

My 5 month old daughters probem started 2 months ago when I went back to work. She passes very very hard stools. At the clinic they recommended I change milk formula, I changed from NAN to ALPI goats milk, but its even worse now, I am afraid this will make her sick if it continues, what can I do, and what causes this? Is it her diet, which comprises of: 1 full bottle of warm water when she wakes up, then eats rice cereal, then 1 bottle milk, fruit puree (pears-purity), then its water again until I get back from work for breastfeeding. Or is it my diet which causes this problem for her? I am really worried!

The problem could well be the goats milk which is very constipating for many infants. You will need to get her off this feed. I am away from South Africa at present and I am not sure whether they have introduced the new infant formulas with probiotics yet. Ask your pharmacist if there is such a formula available. If not it will be helpful to go back onto NAN or similar formula and give your baby Reuteri drops every day for at least 2 weeks. The rest of her diet seems appropriate at this stage. Use an infant glycerine suppository to help her to pass the constipated stool that is worrying her.

Thanx for the advice. I get home around 6pm. The reason I don't feed her often is because I thought the formula might be causing the constipation, the reason for the water is I thought it might help loosen the bowels, and I've tried prunes, it doesn't work, I also give her mixed veggies - purity.

You don't say what time you get home, 'cos the way I read your note, seems like your baby only gets 1 bottle for the day, besides the food & water ????
My baby's on Infacare 2, has 4 bottles for the day, 2 solids (cereal morning & cereal night) and water in between ... has started teething as well. Also been constipated, caused by the solids but a little bit of behoedmiddel in his bottle with his formula helps (not every day though).

Hello Ulrike. Try purity prune ( first food ), my daughter ( almost 7 months old on S26 gold ) has also suffered with constipation. Now we give her a small purity prune every 2nd to 3rd day and it helps to keep her tummy going. I think that sometimes their tummy's just need time adjusting to the food and then they get constipated. Hope it helps.
