second language

Hi Doc,

My daughter is two and started creche two weeks ago. The school is English medium. I thought she will cope but im not too sure anymore.
Her first language is N.sotho and she comminicates well when speaking her first lanuage. She is not making friends and i think is due to that.

Is it going to be difficult for her to adjust or is it still early for me to be worried?

Do not be worried. You will be amazed how soon your little girl starts to speak English as well as her N. Sotho. She will soon be making friends and enjoying her time at the creche.

I agree with the other two comments. I live in Europe now and I speak English to my little one. She will, of course, learn Afrikaans from me and she will have to learn the local language here too. I know 2 other kids who have grown up with all 3 languages here too and they are doing VERY well. It''s best to let a child experience as much as possible when young because they learn faster that way, in my opinion. Another tip that I learned is that a lot can be learned from TV. My parents were both English speaking BUT I chose to watch Afrikaans shows, for example, and this helped me learn Afrikaans by myself in the beginning. Good luck!

She will adjust and pick up the english but you will have to give her lots of love and attention to get over the initial hard part. Good luck
