Is it normal, what causes this?
I have also noticed some whitish substance on his tongue. Again he is getting breastmilk and all the neccessary blood tests when i was still pregnant were negative. I would like to know the cause for all this and again ways in which I can avoid all thi.

There are 2 possibilities with his watery stools, either he has a lactose intolerance or he has picked up an infection such as gastro-enteritis. He is very young to have such an infection. I am concerned that he has thrush at the age of one week. I suggest that he is seen by a paeditrician as soon as possible in order to decide exactly what is causing this problem. It may be necessary to repeat his tests for immunity.

THANKS FOR BOTH RESPONSES. I HAVE INDEED SEEN THE PAED AND SHE TOLD ME THAT THERE EAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE SMELL OF STOOLS, INFACT SHE SAID THEY SMELL NORMAL. THE WHITE SUBSTANCE IS INDEED BREASTMILK NOT THRUSH AND ACCORDING TO THE PAED MY BABY IS PEFERCTLY HEALTHY.

THANK YOU

Hi there,
I'm afraid I don't know all the answers to your questions, but I do know that yellow watery stools are very normal, and it's also normal for a newborn to look VERY uncomfortable (even cry) when passing them, I think this is because it's still all very new and traumatic to them, but the pead should be able to shed some real light on why this normally happens. Stools should not be smelly though, especially not in a breastfed baby - at most it should smell a bit "sour" if that makes sense.

White substance on the tongue is probably residue milk - this happens in most cases and my baby has that too. You can put some boiled down water on an earbud and gently try to wipe the tongue clean. If it doesn't budge, it could be thrush, but I doubt that in such a brand new baby and especially so if he's breastfed. Mine got a bit of a thrush from her dummy last week, used Dactarin oral gel and it was gone in a day. But the way I knew it was thrush, was the fact that when she yawned I could see the white spots on the sides of the inside of her mouth.

Hope that helps in some way? Good luck.
