Runny eyes

My daughter has recovered from a cold about a week ago, and last night throughout the night it sounded as if she had a blocked nose, but when she woke up this morning it looked clear, although it was slightly runny again. Over and above this, both her eyes had a lot of " sleep"  and fluid coming out of it. I tried to wipe it off and it was hard, which I am sure is becuase it dried during the night. After wiping it then she seemed fine, and her eyes were normal. I am worried as to why both her eyes were so full of liquid, and it almost looked like puss. This has never happened before with any other cold or flu. Should I be concerned?

It is possible that your little girl has a virus infection of her eyes posssibly following on from her recent cold. Prepare a dilute saline solution using a quarter teaspoonful of salt in a cup of boiled water. Dip small cotton wool swabs in this fluid and wipe her eyes twice daily. It is important to wipe from the nose side of her eyes outwards. Discard each cotton wool swab after a single wipe.
