Q.

running tummy

I've got 6 moths old son, he's got a running tummy. I've been changing formulas because he doesn't like drinking the bottle and I don't breast feed. His peaditrician has asked to use lactogen. Now I am not sure whether this is caused by this formula or teething. what should I use to stabilize his tummy. I am worried because I'm concerned about his weight as well.

It is difficult for me to advise you here because you do not say how long your baby's tummy has been runny. Also whether you think it is due to one or other of the formulas you have given him. It may simply be due to a tummy bug but it seems more likely that he may be reacting to the milk formulas. He may have lactose intolerance.Try him on a soya formula such as Isomil2 or Infasoy and see if his stools improve. If his stools are very watery and frequent he will benefit from a full day off milk and the use of a rehydrating/electrolyte solution such as Gastrolyte or Rehidrat and then onto the new Soya formula.

Hi Concerned,

My son's tummy has been running since the 12th! He's just turned 6 months so I also changed his formula to Lactogen No. 2.
I've just been administering Hydrol and I've been using the reuteri drops.
Been to the paed. yesterday and she suggested that since it's been so long and apart from the diarrhea, he's healthy-no sunken fontanell, not dehydrated so he must be having an allergic reaction to something.
So for two weeks she's instructed that we cut out wheat, diary and fruit. He's on soya milk and rice cereal from today and allowed a small amount of banana, but that's from next week only...if his tummy hasnt settled by Saturday, we need to go in for the doc to collect a sample of the poo...this means then that I have to cut out the same things from my diet so that I dont pass it onto him when I breastfeed at night and on the weekends...
It could be anything though, so please use some reydration therapy (like hydrol/rehidrate) in the meantime to keep his fluids up. If you're still feeling concerned, see your doc/paed again.
Hope this helps a bit and your babas feels better soon!

Warm regards,
Danni
