Roundworm etc

Dear Prof

I have previously written about my 14 month old with the Pica. The last 3 or 4 weeks he has been struggling with constipation. The week before last I started giving him Duphulac. It helped a bit. But by day 3, there was a huge (almost 13 cm) roundworm in his stool. I immediately bought and gave him a SD of Vermox. I only read afterwards that under 2 yr olds shouldn’ t be given Vermox. Anyway, his fine, but no more worms were visible. His appetite has also diminished and I’ m wondering whether he actually had a ‘ healthy appetite’  because of the worm and whether it also caused the Pica? He is still struggling with constipation though. What I want to know is:

1. He has been on NAN 3 since March. He did not suffer from constipation when we changed his milk, but could it possibly be the formula?
2. Is the Vermox SD sufficient in getting rid of the roundworm/s? He must’ ve had it for some time and most probably got it from eating who knows what? Should I have him tested or scanned? I read about ascariasis and it is terrible.
3. Should I carry on with the duphulac?

Thank you

It is difficult to know what the start of your son's problem was,but he had pica so eating sand caused the round worm infestation and also his constipation. He should not have has Vermox SD at his age. He can have the ordinary Vermox syrup for 3 days in 3months time when you need to repeat the dose. It would be a good idea to change his milk to either Nido or Parmalat First Growth milk. Continue with the Duphalac in the meantime.
