Rheumatic fever is a condtion caused by the streptococcus bacteria not a virus.Streptococcus is highly sensitive to penicillin. In rheumatic fever there are several major problems that may develop, joint involvement, skin rash and in particular an infection of the heart valves. It is essential to be seen and treated by a paediatrician, preferably a paediatric cardilogist. Children with rheumatic fever need to be treated on penicillin for many years on a continuous basis. Other medicines may also be required depending on the severity of the condition. Please see that your son is treated as soon as possible.
