Restless sleeper

Dear Doc
My 7 month old is a very happy and healthy baby, but a very restless sleeper. It seemed to get better when I started her on cereal and Vi-Daylin, but now she is on 3 solid meals (cereal with yogurt, fruit and yellow/orange veg) a day and wakes up almost every 2 hours (sometimes more frequent) during the night again. I breastfeed her and she feeds once during the night, the other times we get her back to sleep by turning her and giving her a dummy. We have noticed that she is quite flatulent during the night and always leaves a few winds before going back to sleep. Could this be the cause of her restless sleep? T

This is a bit difficult to answer as there as a few possibile causes of your baby's restlessness. Her windiness may indicate that she has some lactose intolerance. Then the fact that she settles on turning her may indicate that she may have some reflux.A third possibility is that she is still a bit hungry. As you are still breaastfeeding this limits our options for testing which is the real cause here.Probably the simplest initial approach would be to give her a half sachet of Gaviscon Infant dissolved in a small amount of water prior to her evening feed and the night feed. If there is no benefit then you should try her on a lactose free formula and cut out all other dairy products in her diet as well eg yoghurt.
