Dear Doc. I wrote to you 2 weeks ago regarding my 11month and a half old baby girl who seemed to have reacted when we gave her probiotic in her formula because she had diarrhea. The reaction seems to come back during the day. If she' s taking a nap during the day the side that was on the pillow will have a reaction (if it' s on the face it will cause her face to swell a bit)and she would scratch the whole body and she only gets comfort when we give her allergex. This happens almost everyday and i' m afraid that if we give her allergex everyday will she not be sleepy and weaker?

I' ve also decided not to put fabric softener (for baby' s) on her clothes. What could be the cause, she also has a dry skin problem. Could be the formula (NAN PERLAGON)? Is it early to change because she is almost 12 months now?

Oh!! the other thing she has this little lump at the back of her head on the left side. It' s a size of a pumkin seed. She doesn' t seem to mind if you touch it. I don' t think its painful anyway. Is if normal for babies to have these and what is the cause?

Thanks Doc

Your baby has a definite allergic skin condition. It sounds like a condition called urticaria. You need to try to find out what is causing this problem. It may be that your baby is allergic to milk. She should be seen by a paediatrician with experience in paediatric allergies. There are experts in all the main centres in SA.In the meantime give her Zyrtec syrup 2.5ml once daily to clear her rash. This is better than Allergex for treating urticaria and will not make her drowsy. The bump behind her head is probably a lymph gland which is slightly enlarged. This is very common in this age group and there is no need for concern.
