Q.

Removal of spleen

My niece of 8 yrs has had her spleen removed due to its being damaged in a motor car accident recently. How will this affect her in the future? What precautionary measures should her mother take to ensure her health? What are the dangers related to such a procedure? Why is a spleen such an important organ in a human being?

Paediatrician

The spleen is a very important organ to improve our immuneresponse against certain organisms. It is not a vital organ, apart from its immune function. After removal of the spleen it is important to contact your paediatrician, if the surgeon has not done this already, to arrange for the necessary immunisations and to discuss the possible use of preventative anti-biotics.
