Recurring Thrush

Dear Dr

My son had thrush when he was about 4 weeks old (I don''t know the cause). It was treated with daktarin. It did move down to his groin area, which was treated with nizcream. It " went away"  quite quickly, although I treated it for at least 5 days. I also increased the amount of infantiforte drops. But now it keeps coming back. He is already 6 months old now. I was at a pediatrician a month ago who also said that it looks like he has it around his mouth. Now treating that with Daktacort. I''m not sure how long I can use the treatments. Because on Monday it seemed that all of it just came back with a bang and now I''m treating him again, with everything.

Is there a reason why it keeps coming back (he was not on any antibiotics) and how long can I use the treatments at a time and what else could I try? He is a very happy contented baby and the only rash that seems to bother him is the one around his mouth. When he eats and the food goes on it, I think it burns him, because he only calms down after I clean the area and put some bepanthen on.

Any advice would be appreciated.

This is an important question. The real question is why your son has repeated candida [thrush] infections as he has not had antibiotics which is the usual cause of this problem. He sounds as if he is a healthy and happy baby, but we need to be sure that his immune system is normal. Ask his paediatrician to do a full blood count test as well as checking his immunoglobulins IgA and Ig G as well as IgG subclasses. The treatments you use are safe and can be repeated often so that is not a concern. The only concern is why your baby is having this problem.

my 10 month old baby also has the same problem. tests were does and nothing was gound. Daktarin seem to work faster but i am worried as i think it irritates him. He closes his mouth a lot this days and refuses to eat. i always sterilise his bottles.
