Recipe Ideas for MARTY


Try these recipes - adjust according to tase of your little ones - like when it says puree, mash or cut accordingly.

Muesli (for babies 9 - 12 months)

1 breakfast biscuit (for instance Weetbix)
1/4 cup All Bran flakes
1/4 cup Rice Crispies
1/3 cup dried fruit (optional) , finely chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons dessicated coconut or 1 1/2 teaspoons brown sugar

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Serve with breast-milk, formula or yoghurt. Decorate with chopped fresh fruit and nuts.

Dried fruits which work well in this recipe are apricots, apples, sultanas, raisins, peaches and mangos. Nuts include sunflower seeds, walnuts and almonds.
Mixed vegetables

Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of protein too.

1 medium sweet potato, chopped

Microwave, steam or boil (careful, don't cook it to death for hours).
Drain and process till smooth.
You could add some breast-milk to get a creamy consistency.
If baby does not eat all of it, store in fridge in an airtight container for up to two days. Heat slightly in microwave before feeding time. You can also freeze this in individual portions.


Use carrots with the above. Or zucchini, pumpkin, beans or peas or creamed corn. It does not matter how many veggies you mix, as long as baby loves it!

Take a small piece of fish (frozen is fine and comes in handy sizes). Debone really carefully making sure none are left.
Boil lightly or steam until soft. Don't overcook because then baby might as well get cardboard to eat.
Process until smooth. You could use breast-milk to make it creamier.


Serve with mixed veggie puree. Or with some pureed apricots or apple. You could freeze individual portions.
Lamb and veggie soup

A few pieces of stewing lamb (trim off all the fat)
1 medium potato
1 medium carrot
1 tablespoon of rice or barley
1 litre of water

Place all the ingredients in a pan and simmer slowly until meat is tender. When cool, process until smooth. You can do this in batches.


Serve this with a bun or piece of bread but keep to soft breads. Babies love sucking on this (as we all know!). Suitable to freeze in individual batches.
Rice surprise

1 cup rice (use the rest for a nice pudding the next day)
1 tomato
some pumpkin
some beans

Cook the rice the normal way.
Steam the veggies lightly in a steamer or simmer in a pan. Don't allow the veggies to become a mess; just cooked through.
Mix with the rice and see if baby likes the textures. If not, process it and try for the texture later.
Chicken and potato soup

2 chicken legs
2 medium potatoes
chicken stock (make this yourself as the commercial brands are too salty)
1 medium carrot

Remove skin and fat from the chicken bones. Boil all the ingredients together until soft.
Pour through sieve.
Reserve liquid.
Fork the chicken into fine flocks.
Process liquid and potatoes until smooth.
Add chicken.
Pizza Feet
10ml dry yeast
2ml brown sugar
150ml warm water
500ml cake flour
5ml salt
30ml oil

Dissolve yeast and sugar in 45-60ml warm water. Leave for 5-10 minutes in a warm place until frothy. Combine flour and salt in a warm bowl and make a well in the centre. Pour in yeast mixture, remaining water and oil. Mix to form a pliable dough, adding more water if necessary. Turn onto a floured board and knead well for 4-5 minutes. Place in a clean, floured bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Leave in a warm place to rise until dough doubles in size (1-2 hours). Knock down and knead lightly. Roll out onto a flat pan. Paint on a thin layer of tomato paste or sauce. Add thin slices of tomato and top with grated cheese. Bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 15-20 minutes or until cheese bubbles. Vary the toppings, for example, chopped pickles, mushrooms, green peppers, pineapple and salami are colourful and tasty. Cut your pizzas into the shape of feet or animal tracks using a sharp, paring knife. These do not have to be anatomically correct, they should just resemble the feet of one or other species!
Fruit ice (for kids 12 - 18 months)

This recipe serves as a delicious as well as healthy substitute for ice cream.

Mash 1 medium banana, medium mango or desired substitute in a bowl. Divide into two containers. Cover tightly and freeze for 6 -12 hours or preferably overnight. Take out of freezer just before serving and let stand for 10 minutes. Beat with a fork until light and creamy. Serve.
