Re Flu

Dear Doc

I took my son (the 5y old who had flu then the tummy ache) to the doctor (GP) and told him about my specific suspision that my son my have a problem with his appendix. He checked him out and said he pressed quite hard and it did not seem to create a response from him. He also checked his urine which was clear. He said it may still be left over not feeling well from the flu that my son describes with a tummy ache.

Although my son did not seem to indicate pain on pressing of the tummy, he had significant pain after - within a minute after and he is now running a fever again. (He had no fever for 3 days).

I am still concerned about him and I just feel something is wrong. About 18 months ago his 10y old brother had the same symptoms and although my GP checked him twice, and said it was not his appendix, you advised me strongly to see a surgeon and when his appendix was removed 24 hours later, it was confirmed appendicitis.

I realize my previous experience makes me predisposed to being unduly concerned. How long do I leave this before taking him back to perhaps see his paeditician or ask the gp for a referral to a surgeon.

I feel worried!

I agree with you, it is very likely that your son may well have appendicitis. It would be best to take him to see his paediatriciian if he still has a fever or is still complaining about his tummy pain.
