Paediatrician

Your son could indeed be allergic as his symptoms sound like the start of asthma. He can be tested by any paediatrician but it is best for him to be seen by a paediatrician with expertise in paediatric allergy. There are specialists in all the main centres in SA. The allergy tests are done either using a test called skin testing or a single blood test called the RAST.

It would be a good idea to have him tested, certain alergies can cause a post nasal drip that couses the child to cough, listen to his breathing for congestion. Usualy it is something he is breathing in, for instance cat hair, polin, dust etc. If he is sensitive, try to vent his room during the day and avoid anything that causes strong odours.

You can have a simple blood test called a RAST test at any laboratory
