Problems burping week-old baby

Baby was born on Friday 20/06/2008 and it is impossible to burp him. He is extremely uncomfortable and once the wind has dislodged it is time for his next feed. Mother is a smoker that's smoked right through her pregnancy.

Obviously smokinhg through pregnancy is against all advive these days, but probably has nothing to do with difficulty in burping her baby. She should keep on trying to burp her baby in the normal way, sometimes it does take a long time before the wind comes up and lots of patience is needed.
