The book toddler taming is very helpful.

Basically, when your son starts asking to wear underpants he''s ready to potty train. This is usually close to the age of three with boys, but anywhere from two and a half to three and a half would be in the normal range.

You can help him to connect the feeling of weeing and his control of it by letting him run around outside with no clothes on. he will be quite fascinated initially when he sees the wee but eventually he will understand.

Your son will still have accidents when he is concentrating on playing nd so on but this will start to happen less and less. Expect one or two accidents on the first day and one every day for the first week and then all will be fine.
When you need to do a long car trip, buy pull ups and tell him they are car underpants for big boys.
he might still need a nappy for day time naps for a few weeks, when he wakes up dry from the nap for at least a week continuously then you can stop putting one on. Personally I used pull ups for nap time.

Expect that he will carry on wearing a night nappy for nearly a year after coming off the nappy during the day. When he is dry every morning for a week you can get rid of the night nappy, but you will still have an accident about once a month or so for a few months and then about once or twice a year until your child is about 5 or 6.
