Potty problem 3.5 yrs sibling death

My oldest son is 3.5 years old. We have been potty training him for a year now. He rarely goes to the toilet when he has a bowl movement. And describes himself as naughty. Sometimes he digs the poo out of the underwear and plays with it.

I had twin boys in August last year, the youngest had Downs with an AV defect, he was in hospital a lot and died in April. Although my oldest has not shown any signs that this bothered him, could this be the cause of his potty training problems?

What can we do to break this habit?

Give your son a complete break from potty training for at least two weeks. Don't mention one word about potties or anything to do with using the toilet in this time. Let your son wear trainer pants. After the 2 week period is up start again, praising any success as much as possible. Do not criticise him if he fails to use the toilet at times. Offer him rewards if he is successful in using the toilet. Have lots of patience with him. I don't think that the death of his baby brother is the cause of this particular problem.
