poor eater

Hi doc! My 21 month old daughter hates food. I stopped breastfeeding her @ 20 months hoping her apetite would increase but to no avail. She was born @ 2.78kg &  46cm. She now weighs 9kgs. I''m really stressed out as she just refuses to eat. Mealtimes are a mission. I also noticed she prefers pureed foods even though her mouth is full of teeth to help with biting and chewing. Plzzzz help! I''m feeling hopeless!

Your little gril's weight is definitely below the average of 11kg for girls of this age. She falls into the lowest 10% group for her weight at this age. So her poor appetite is affecting her weight gain. She needs to eat what she likes and you have identified that she likes pureed food still. That is fine as long as she will eat. Do not let mealtimes become a battle. She is old enought to join the family at mealtimes and should sit in her high chair at the table. Put her food in front of her and give her a spoon and let her feed herself. She will watch you eat and will copy you. Don't worry if she leaves some food on the plate. Don't watch her while she eats.Little girls are pretty clever about learning to feed themselves. She may take a while but she will learn to eat more and more.Slowly start giving her coarser food but give her time to get used to each new kind of food.
