poor eater

hi doc my 12 month old boy refuses to eat. he does not swallow his food. this has been going on for months but it has become very worrisome now, for instance yesterday he kept the food in his mouth for more than 45 minutes - i was timing him. all he had was just two sppons of veggies. he does with whatever food is given to him, he also does not take his milk very well. he only drinks 2x 200mls per day. on 17 aug he weighed 9.5kg and when i took him to a doctor a week later on 27 aug he weighed 8.20kg.

we''ve tried all kinds of foods, he just refuses to eat. we''ve also tried making meal times fun, or to feed him at his own pace. nothing helps. he''s walking and running and has cut 4 teeth, so maybe his development hasn''t been severely affected yet. but what do i do, i dont think he can afford to lose anymore weight

It is difficult to believe that your son could have lost so much weight in 10 days. If his weight was correctly measured on 17 Aug then his weight was normal for his age on that day.If his weight was measured correctly on 27 Aug and he has indeed lost so much weight, his weight is now very low on the infant growth chart. His food refusal is worrying as it is so significant as is the small amount of milk that he drinks daily.I would like your son to be seen by a paediatrician to be sure that he is well and for advice about feeding him.If you prefer you can take him to see a paediatrician at your nearest state hospital with a paediatric out patients department.
