There are several causes by both bacteria and viruses. A very common cause is due a virus known as Respiratory Syncitial Virus or RSV.This clears up after 7 to 10 days. Bacterial causes such as due to the pneumococcus for example are very responsive to antibiotics and the child is soon well again.

My daughter had pneumonia last year. It can be caused by flu that "go" worse. It MUST be treated by a doctor/ hospital with antibiotics as it could leave permanent damage to the chld's lungs. The child will also have difficulty breathing and if complications set it for the worse the child can die! Please don't leave this untreated.
