overweight kid, bold spots, help please?

Hi doc
I have 3 problems with my child, aged 3.(girl)
1. How do I know if she is overwieght? She is 3 but wears 6-7 year old clothing. She does not look chubby but also not thin.(she is avarage height)
2. She has light spots/marks in her face, people say it is a lack of vitamins or iron. (I give her vitamin syrup each day!)
3. Her hair grows very slowly and she has a few bold spots, what causes this, and what can I use. Her hair looks like a babies.
Thanks a lot

I need to know her weight and height to answer your first question.
The marks on her face are known as 'pityriasis'. This is thought to be a viral skin condition which clears up by itself. You can speed up the healing of this rash by using Mylocort ointment once daily on the spots.
I am not happy about her bald patches. This may be due to a fungal infection of her scalp. Please ask a doctor to see her.

Hi Mom of Lerato

You need to take your little one to a GP or Paediatrician - the baldness and the light marks could be an iron deficiency, but you need an expert to check this for you. If your daughter does not look overweight, then she is not overweight. Some children are just bigger boned or taller than others their age, and you cannot go by a generic clothing manufacturers sizes to gauge what is the average for a child. If you visit a GP or Paed with your daughter, they can also check her weight and height, so put your fears to rest.
