Nose Picking

My 6 yr old son constantly picks his nose. It seems like it has become an obsession. Recently his nose tends to bleed quite often. What can we do to make him stop.

This is a very common habit with young children. It can be very difficult to stop. As with all habits in children, the more you remark about it the worse it can get. So difficult as it may be you need to say absolutely nothing about his nose picking and try your best to ignore it.Make sure tha his nails are short and cannot damage the lining of his nose. Use a Saline Nose Spray such as Sterimar twice daily to clear all old mucous crusts out of his nose and this will also help with his tendency to have nose bleeds.

My son is the same. We''ve tried ignoring it, we''ve tried star charts, he just carries on - especially when he is tired or going off to sleep. I''ve now told him that he must use a tissue and only do it in private otherwise his friends won''t want to touch his hands or play with him.
I''m really worried as next year in grade 1 other children are going to be quite mean to him about it. Maybe the peer pressure will finally make it end though.
