Dear Doc

My 2yr old has been waking up - screaming these past two nights. On Sunday night it was at 20h40 and last night it was in the early hours of the morning. On Sunday night I tried to pick him up and console him, but he wouldn' t let me touch him and throws himself around on the bed. Last night I didn' t do anything, I just let him cry it out. You can hear that it is a frightening/scared cry. He, however, falls asleep again, after throwing himself around. Do you think it would help if we leave the camcorder on above his bed and maybe see what happens before the crying start?

I' m really worried about him. He is in daycare during the day and lately he would take a ruler and spank his bum, he definitely never saw this at home.

Your son is going through a phase of having 'night terrors' This is extremely common in this age group. Go to him and reassure him then leave the room immediately. The problem will gradually disappear with time. Usually no cause or reson for the onset of these night terrors is found. It would be a good idea to speak to the creche and ask if they have ever hit any of the children with a ruler.
