Newborn mastitis is very common and is caused by hormones and is not due to an infection. This is is why the surgeon did not drain anything from the breast. This mastitis usually disappears by itself in a few weeks. Newborn mastitis does not lead to breast cancer and breast development should be normal when your baby girl reaches puberty.
