Q.

New born baby (4 weeks ) with stomach cramps

Hi Doc

My daugther was born on the 04 November 2005 and suffers with stomach cramps, have taken her to see the paediatrician and he said that she does not have colic, but is suffering from a symtom in which she has not developed an imune sysytem which helps in setting off some sort of "morphine" and this will kick in from 6 weeks. Some days she is fine others she can be awake for 5,6,7 hours of the day crying and then she will be fine. We are giving her Bennets Colic Syrup. What else could you suggest ??

Many Thanks
Andrew

I am not happy with this diagnosis.Certainly colic does not usually affect such young infants but it can. Has you baby been fully examined? There may be all sorts of causes for this complaint. Please ask for a second opinion if you are concerned.

Try Buscopan and also try swaddling her (wrapping her tightly in a receiver blanket with her arms inside the blanket facing downwards). It has a calming effect on them. Trust me I had a similar problem with my son.
