Nearly 4 year old

Hi Dr,
My daughter is turning 4 in August. She is incredibly cheeky, disrespectful, etc. Not from a lack of discipline. She has a younger sister and I think she does still battle to share the attention. For the past 2/3 months she''s been terribly emotional, although she has always been a sensitive child. When she started at the new school at the beginning of the year the teacher did highlight that my daughter doesn''t like it if her hands get dirty, or if her clothes get dirty etc. although this problem doesn''t present itself at home. I also find it impossible to find out what causes her crying etc. (she always answers that she doesn''t know). The other day she went into a complete range of screaming in my face, when taking her to her room she goes completely hysterical and clutches on as if her life depends on it. She also claims that she doesn''t know how to stop her crying once she starts.

Eventually, my question is.... is this normal behaviour for her age or could there possibly be another problem? Do I need to take her to a phsychologist (or someone) to assist with her being able to cope with her own emotions?

Thanks and apologies for the long e-mail.

This is a very good question and you have set out your daughter's problems very well. This is not normal behaviour for a 4 year old girl.Your daughter appears to be remarkably intelligent and is able to describe her emotions and feelings very well.It is possible that she has a form of OCD some features of which the teacher has noticed but does not manifest at home.It is essential that your daughter be seen by a child psychologist.
