Q.

My little Porky!

At age 38, i gave birth to the most beautiful baby girl. Michaela is now 5 months old and weighs in at a very healthy 9kg! We have taken her for check ups to see if the weight has affected her in any way, but she is completely healthy. She was breast fed up until a month ago, and now has 4 bottles of formula per day of 200ml each - i add porridge to her breakfast bottle. She also has a small purity in the late afternoon. I know i am not overfeeding her and yet she continues to gain nicely. She is a very strong baby, but i am concerned that the weight will impede her crawling - she hates to be on her tummy - perhaps it is too uncomfortable for her? In every other aspect of her development she is thriving - should i be worried about the weight?

She sounds like she is a really delightful and happy baby. When she is mobile she will shed some of her weight. Her diet seems to be pretty normal. I would not worry too much.

My baby was the same, and is now 12Kg at 11 months, and as happy as can be. You need not worry about her weight till she's about 3 years old. As for crawling, once she's discovered that she can "go places" and be mobile, she'll love it. My baby "lost" a lot when she started crawling, even though her weight did not drop, she seemed to "shape up" a bit more. Don't worry - a big baby is a healthy baby!
