My 7 year old son is constantly sick with fever and missing school

Hi Doc,

My son is always sick and has missed so many days at school.
He always has a fever and headache and is lethargic. He finished 2 courses of antibiotic (one straight after the other) at the beginning of october" /end november (he suffers with his sinuses and is on 5ml deselex daily and avamys nasal spray daily). and then missed school on the ffg days: 13 &  14 Oct fever, 21 Oct chesty croupy cough, 31st Oct fever since yesterday. He had his tonsils removed 3 years ago yet he still suffers with swollen glands and ear infections (he''s had grommets 5 times!).

Pls help or refer me to someone who can help us as i dont mind having a full body health test done on him.

He is always miserable and has been to paediatricians etc and all they say is that he suffers with his sinuses.

I appreciate all your advise.

Kind regards.

I agree with you that your son really needs a full examination and tests to find out why he so susceptable to infections. His illnesses do not appear to suggest that sinusitis is his main problem. I am especially concerned that he always has a fever. There must be some reason for this. It is possible that he has glandular fever or an illness such as malta fever [brucellosis]. There are other possible causes as well. He needs to be seen by a paediatric immunologist. These experts are rather few and far between in this country. If you are near to Pretoria, there is a paediatric immunologist in the department of paediatrics at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital. In Cape Town at the Red Cross Children's Hospital and at Tygerberg Children's Hospital.
