Q.

Mumps and Tonsillitis - what is the link?

THe RHS of my 9 1/2 year old son's face swelled below the ears, and he complained of throat pain that woke hime from sleep. He has been diagnosed with Tosillitis - but with the outside possibility of this developing into mumps. What is the connection?

I must admit that this sounds more like mumps and a blood test could confirm this. Mumps may also cause a red throat, but it is rare to cause frank tonsillitis. Making the diagnosis is not essential, because it is a selflimiting condition in the vast majority of children.
