Milk Allergy?

I have a 12 month old that always seem to have a wet cough. He''s been in creche from 4 months, but his cough started before that. He has a 4 year old sister, so he could''ve picked up something from her before he started creche. I breastfed exclusively for the first 4 months, and now I''m still breastfeeding evenings and mornings. I noticed in the beginning when I had diary he would get eczema, and his cough would get worse, so when I started to give formula inbetween I gave Nan HA. On his weight and length charts he was just above average, so there is no problem there. He also doesn''t have runny poo, but either normal or sometimes a bit constipated. He does get quite a bit of gas that wakes him up in the evenings as well.

He has been diagnosed 3 times by a paediatrician with bronchiolitis, and is now on a 3 month course of Singulair. The last time I was at the paediatrician I asked if he should be tested for a milk allergy, and the paediatrician said it is not necessary but we can continue with the Nan HA and leave other diary for later. Can I have him tested on my own for an allergy (where do I take him)? It bothers me that he is still getting eczema inbetween and that he never sleeps for long stretches and that his cough is not getting better.

You have been very observant and when your baby developed eczema it should have been an alert to the fact that your baby is probably allergic. It is very likely that he has asthma now. He must definitely be tested for allergies, not only to milk but also to egg, peanut and wheat and also to cat and housedust mites. It would be best to take your baby son to be seen by paediatric allergist. There are experts in all the main centres in SA.
