Hi Doctor. I have a 2.5yr old with a history of wheezing and rhinitis.Allergy tests for inhalants and food came back negative. She is on 4mg Singulair and 5ml Zytrec daily. She does not sleep much and when she does she is very restless. She eats no chicken, meat, bread etc (only veggies) so i give her creche guard (multivitamin), magneplex (magnesium) and Zinplex Jnr (zinc &  vit c &  selenium) daily and she has 400ml Isomil 3 before bed.
Is this adequate for a toddler?
Are all these medicines safe to give her?

Many Thanks

It appears that your little girl is not allergic. She probably has recurrent viral wheezing, Here virus infections trigger episodes of wheezing. In most cases children with this condition grow out of the illness by about the age of 3 years. Your daughter will benefit from being on Singulair as it is indicated for this condtion. As she is not allergic there is no need for Zyrtec which is effective for allergic nasal conditions. I presume that your doctor has excluded the possibility that your daughter's nasal symptoms are due to enlarged adenoids.Use saline nose drops such as Salex twice daily to keep her nose clear. Her restlessness probably stems from her blocked nose and also her food preferences. I am a bit concerned about her protein intake as she does not eat meat or chicken, but she is drinking Isomil which provides first class protein.Do not give her too many supplements. Creche Guard and Zinplex are enough.
