Q.

Medicine battles

Hi Doc,
My daughter of two is currently going through a rough time with ear infections, flu etc, probably due to the fact she is in creche, unfortunately I don't have another alternative. The problem I am having as I am sure 99% of parents do is getting the medine in, if the medicine doesn't make her gag she simply pursers her lips and spits out what ever I try and get in. I have found that if I mix the antibiotic in her rooibos tea she takes it without and issue. My only worry is that this perhaps "deminishes" the medicine somehow and it doesn't work in any case. Please advise, thank you

I think that you have hit on a wonderful solution to you medicine problem. The short exposure to the rooibos tea will not cause any changes in the medicine so continue on this . Your daughter will benefit from the long term [minimum 3 months ] use of a probiotic in drop or chewable tablet form.

HI there Maureen,

I had the same problem with my daughter not wanting to take medicine...i use to also put it in her her bottle but doc said, it doesn't really work like that....
so what i use to do was sit down lay her across my legs on her back, hold her arms down and sqeese the medicine with a syringe in her mouth, little bits at a time (not to let her choke) and blow gently into her face ..it use to be a hell of a fight but it worked......
or when she was sleeping i use to put a very little bit of water and the medicine in her bottle and let her drink it while she's sleeping....

luckly she's 2 and a half now and i have no problems giving her medicine.....haha...if she gets a scratch on her leg and its sore then she wants medicine....

anyway good luck and don't worry the phase of taking medicine will pass.....

yes, we have had the same, do you use a syringe? I find that best. And I must say, it may not be the right thing to do, but bribery works, you can have a sweet if you have all your medicine...does the trick for us. The concern with mixing it with drinks is that if she doesn't finish the drink then she doesn't get the correct dose of medicine.
