Medication for kids whilst flying

Hi Doc
I will be flying to Australia in April with my 14mnth old and my 4yr old daughters. Could u please prescribe or advise me on the best pre-flight medication for the two as you are aware that the flight will be quite lengthy. We have flown domestically before and my youngest complained of ear-ache. Is there any way that one could combat this? I am aware of the normal, intake of fluids tip.
Thank you

No medicines are recommended as they make children confused and unhappy while flying. You could use saline nose drops for both of them just before take off and keep your younger child sucking as you take off and come into land. The older child can also suck on something such as a sweet.

must just add be cautious of stopayne, I gave it to mya daughter before a flight on advice of the pharmacist and it made her hyper. Usually those are evning flights so they should sleep, just take enough activities to keep them occupied when they are not sleeping

For the ears, give your children something to suck or chew on during take off and landing and this will help.

If you want to make them sleepy - just give them some stopayne during the flight about half an hour before you want them to go to sleep. Its not ideal to dose them - but on long flights - most moms do. Some even ask theire peads to prescribe Vallergan, but I wouldn't want to use something so strong just for a bit of peace on a flight. I do think that some stopayne will help them to relax and the sleep will do them good.
