Dear Doc

Please can you clear up the conflicting information regarding the use of mecurechrome (spelling?) on children' s cuts and sores. My paediatrician says it is completely safe and the best anti-septic. However, our first-aider at works says big NO, due to the danger of mecury poison. First-aid kits do not come supplied with it anymore. Is it safe to use on our children' s open cuts and sores?

Mercurochrome is no longer available in many countries because of its mercury content. It is no longer recommended for use in children. The FDA has banned its use in the USA.
