Malaria propholactics

Hi Doc,
We plan to visit Kruger park for 5 days in December. My daughter is 20 months old. What Malaria propholactics would be suitable for her to take? We will also use peaceful sleep etc.

It is usually recommended that children under 5 years should not visit a known malarial area unless this is absolutely neceassary. Having said this if you do decide to take your little daughter to the Kruger Park the best malaria prophylactic for her is Malanil Paediatric tablets. Speak to your pharmacist about this. Treatment has to be started one week before entering the malarial area. Other mosquito avoidance measures must still be used as well.

If you want to visit the Kruger I would suggest that you rather go in winter. Not only is your chances of being bitten by a malaria carrying mosquito much lower, you can also see more because the grass is not so high.
