another question - at what age can children start taking malaria prophylactics? I was told age 5.

Certain anti-malarials may be given to infants if absolutely necessary, but these medicines may not be effective against some forms of malaria. The other problem is the high incidence of side effects.By the age of 5 yearsmost of the prophylactic anti-malarials should be safer to use.
