Lump on base of head

My 7 year old son has a lump the size of a marble on the right hand side of his head, just above the hairline. I only discovered it a week ago, but it could have been there for longer? The lump is very hard and does not move and is not sore. He has no compaints about it and is not having headaches. I took him to the doctor yesterday, who suspected exostosis but the x-rays showed no signs of this. I am quite concerned and was looking for some advice. Thanks

This lump is probably due to an enlarged lymph gland. An isolated enlarged gland may be due to a sore that he may have had on his scalp recently or due to a region ear infection. Another common cause in children of this age is a tick bite on the scalp. If not due to a tick bite, the enlarged gland should disappear quite rapidly by itself.
