Q.

low muscle tone

I have been told by the pre primary that our daughter, 3 in October has low muscle tone. She does battle with small muscle skills ie cutting, holding pens ect and her speech is retarded. Her attention span is very short. Although She trys to talk she battles to pronounce the words. She understand everthing you say to her but she just can't get the words out to reply. She runs, climbs, skips and hops. Although she used to lose her balance freguently we have seen a great improvement in that area.
Our GP is sending her for blood tests, thyroid,glucose,calcium,u+ecreatine9, cardiac muscle markers ck.
Can you advise me as to what he is looking for?
Thanks
Tony

Paediatrician

Your GP is looking for possible causes of low muscle tone in young children especially a low thyroid function. I am sure all these tests will be normal. From what you have written here, I feel it is important to have your little girl assessed by a paediatric developmental expert or paediatric neurologist. There are experts in all the main centres in SA.
