Little concentration

Hi Doc, I''m not sure if you may have some suggestions, if not, who can I address my query to? My daughter is in Grade 1 and will be turning 7 in July. She is very bright and is achieving very well at school, and her teachers are very happy with her progress. She plays sport twice a week, follows a well balanced diet and gets on average about 10 hours of sleep every night. My concern is that she struggles to concentrate. Her teacher mentioned after the 1st term that this is not a major problem considering she is coping very well with her school work. We have been doing exercises recommended last year by her Grade R teacher which helps to a certain point, but her teacher now tells me that should her concentration not improve, my daughter might start falling behind with her class work. The teacher has suggested taking my daughter to a Neuro Paed to assess this situation which I think may be a bit drastic BUT I am willing to do whatever will assist her. Do you have any suggestions on how to help? And do you think taking her to a Neuro Paed will be a good idea? If not a Neuro Paed, what type of specialist would be best?

This is not an easy question to answer as it is difficult to know if your daughter has a real problem or not. She is bright and does well at school and loves games as well. She sleeps for 10 hours a night. She seems to be a model child. It is difficult to know why her teacher is concerned. Sometimes bright children become a bit bored with the routine work in classrooms. They are way ahead of the rest of the class for most of the lessons each day in terms of their understanding of the subject being taught. It does not appear that your daughter actually has a problem.
