Q.

Itchy eyes

My daughter is 12 months and has been vigorously rubbing her eyes since she was about 9 months. Her paediatrician feels that there's nothing he can do until she's 18 months. I'm getting frustrated b'cos at times her eyes are so red and appear sleepy. I went for a second opinion and was told that she had an allergy and was given eye drops. However, she screams when we apply that. I've since stopped using the drops after using them twice. I'm very concerned as there could be repurcusions for the future.

If her eyes are itchy then an eye allergy is very likely. Have you got a cat at home?If you do have a cat it must not come anywhere near your baby and especially not into her bedroom. Treating her eye allergy at her age is going to be difficult as many of the eye treatments will cause some burning of her eyes at first.None of the anti-allergic eye drops are licenced for use in such a young baby. You will need to make your own saline eye washes which you should use twice daily. Make a dilute salt solution using a quarter teaspoonful of salt in a cup of boiled and cooled water and wipe each eye from the nose side outwards using clean cotton wool swabs for each eye.
