Is this Asthma or a Chronic Cough?

Hi Prof,

My three and half year old son who goes to pre-school has been having a chesty wet couph, which is Plegmy for almost a year now. We took him to the Paed several times who diagnosed Rhinitis Allergy and put him on Singulair, Deselex and Flomist Spray as Chronic Medication but still doesnt go away. Also done several tests which all came back negative, including T.B and HIV etc. Also took him for Physio, which helps for a short period and then it comes back again.

I have cut dairy in his diet but is Asthma all about couphing?
If it is Asthma, what tests should be done on him and what is the correct treatment for Asthma in children. He only cough in the morning and at night. Or should I see a Pulmonologist for an opinion?

Thank you

Your son's chest problem does not sound at all like he has asthma. There are important illnesses such as a possible inhaled foreign body or even cystic finbrosis that need to be excluded with his present symptoms and their long duration and their failure to respond to treatment. It would definitely be best to take him to see a paediatric pulmonologist.
