Q.

IS IT OK FOR 6 MTH OLD EATING ALL BRAN / WHEAT BIX

My 6month old nephew has a consitpation problem and a doctor advised my sister to give some All Bran Flakes with his Purity porridge. He now spits his Purity Porridge out ... my sister is thinking of giving him only All Bran Flakes or Wheat Bix - is this advisable at such a young age?

There would be no harm done, but it would be impossible for a child of this age to chew it properly and he may struggle to swallow it. Lactulose syrup is usually a safe and effective laxative that may alleviate the problem, while a healthy balanced diet is introduced.

You could heat it up and make it so it's like a smooth paste, am thinking of giving my baby it.

A baby should only just have started on solids at 6 months, so the food should be either blended or finely mashed. All Bran and Wheat Bix have too rough a texture for a 6 month old.

Nuffing is right, stewed prunes will do well. She can also buy purity prunes.

If she is breast feeding, she should offer lots of drinks from the breast to quench thirst with foremilk. If she is bottle feeding she could try offering a little bit of water at meal times so that baby's fluid intake is upped (normally one only starts to give baby anything other than milk to drink from about 8 months, so offering water might not be advisable).

She should try stewed prunes instead.
