iron supplement for 7 week old baby

Hi, my baby is 7 weeks and her doctor told me that I should give her iron drops till she is 1 year old since I am breastfeeding her. I have given her once these drops but she was vomiting afterwords. Can I give her iron when she is a bit bigger or I should keep trying giving it to her?

It is not necessary to give your baby extra iron at this stage. Healthy babies have sufficient iron stores in their body to last at least until the age of 6 months.

when my baby was 6weeks old, my pead prescribed vidialyn drops with added iron - i used to put it in her first bottle in the mornings - she was on formula milk

no fussiness, she sleeps from 8 at night until 5:30 in the morning since she was 3months old, never experienced constipation and i am still using the drops daily.

The iron in breastmilk is low - but it is the right amount - and almost 100% of it is absorbed by your baby.

At around 6 months, when stores from the pregnancy are used up and what is in the breastmilk becomes insufficient is around the stage when we introduce solids - and baby gets iron that way - so there is never really a need for iron supplements in a breastfed baby - unless the baby is tested and a genuine problem is found by the doctor.
There is research that giving iron supplements causes fussiness in babies and affects their sleep as they suffer from constipation.
