Infected bug bites and rash

Dear Paed

Last Thursday my son (almost 5) was bitten by bed bugs (we are very embarassed about it especially as our house gets vacuumed 3x per week!) and by Sunday the bites (mostly in his middle above his pajama pants - all in a nice line with some more scattered about his upper body and his lower legs) seemed infected as they made white pimples. He also has a fine rash over his chest and shoulders and a pimply rash by his one mouth corner. He now has an itchy bum, and black circles under his eyes. Could these rashes etc be related? he''s not sick, but he looks terrible. Do I need take him to his pead for a check-up?

Your son's bites are not due to bed bugs but more likely are due to sand flea bites. Children are often bitten by sand fleas when playing in sand or sand pits. The rash is called 'papular urticaria'. Read more about this on Google. There is an excellent New Zealand site for information so look out for it. Your son may now have developed an infection in these bite areas because of scratching and he may now have a condition called impetigo. From your description this is very likely especially with the rash being on his face as well.He should be seen by a doctor today.

Unfortunately its the second time its has happened. It has a very typical pattern, all bites nicely in a row exactly where the skin is exposed during sleeping. Previous time ended up in a visit to the dermatologist after the GP said it was scabies!! poor child plus whole creche had to be treated with stuff that burned the skin and all completely unnecassary! We treated the mattress on Friday and found the insects - utterly disgusting!! And honestly, we have a very clean house because LO is allergic to dustmites. So mattress has to fumigators need to visit again.

Racoon, sorry to intrude but how do you know the bites are bed bugs?
