My son who is almost 3 yrs old had an allergy test and his IGE came back at 1275. The doc says this is high, but he didnt test specifics. He has been suffering form ear infection, runny nose and cough for a long time and is now booked to see an ear specialist. I wonder if it is neccesary to test for specific allergies. My 13 yr old has allergies such as wheat, dairy, egg and dust mites and tree pollens and cats. I did try change his diet, but he ended up eating nothing, so I let him have dairy, etc. Now I wonder if I need to go through this all again with my 3 yr old?

Your 3 year old son has a very high IgE level indeed. The normal for his age is 40. This means that he is a highly allergic child. He sounds as if he has allergic rhinitis [nasal allergy] and asthma. He should definitely be tested for allergies and should preferably be seen by a paediatric allergist. There are specialists in all the main centres in SA.
