Q.

Hyperactive child

Hi I would like to find out what can be done for my son who is 6 years old and has just started grade one. Last year in grade 0,his teacher had concerns about his concentration. we saw a neurologist. she could not find any real obvious problems with his brain. we now go to an occupational therapist, his new teacher thinks we must start Ritalin. I am very concerned because everything i read about the drug is so negative and the side effects are so harsh. The doctor we saw said he is not Hyper active but Hypo active whats the difference and are they treated in the same way. My son has picked up on the concerns and is obviously now having self esteem issues too.

Paediatrician

The first thing that you require here is a definite diagnosis.Does your child have an attention deficit problem [ADD] and not ADHD or what is his problem? The best person to decide this is a paediatric neurologist. You need to see the original neurologist again or get a second opinion from another expert. Hypoactive children are sluggish and slow and sometimes have insufficient thyroid hormone although this is exteremly unlikely with your son.

Hi there

Just want to tell you that we had the same with our son and the paed suggested we try Ritalin. I was so scared as I heard/read such bad things. The difference in my son has been absolutely amasing. He can do things now that he could not do before and it seems like his learning has exploded. He is a pleasure to be around whereas before, it was a challenge. We still need extra patience at night and early morning before he takes his Ritalin. He went from feeling stupid and lacking confidence to this little happy boy who cant wait to go to school.

Dont believe all the bad you have read. Ritalin is a serious drug - but for a child who needs it, it is a lifesaver. If you can, try and get hold of the book : Beyond Toddlerdom by Christopher Green and read the chapter on ADHD and Ritalin. If you go into Exclusive Books you can just read the chapter without buying the book - it's about 10 pages.

I have not for one second regretted putting my son on Ritalin.

Good luck
