How often

Dear Doc

My son has been on Ritalin since December 2007. He started on 10mg and at the end of last year moved to Ritalin 20mg LA. He experiences none of the side effects and is doing very well on it. How often do I need to have him re-assessed with his peadiatrician. I last saw the pead in December. He suugested we give my son a break over christmas holidays as he had not picked up much weight. He did increase in height and he eats very well. Should I see the pead every six months or just when we are concerned or see a problem. My son is almost 8.

Thank you

Although your son is doing well on Ritalin, he does need to be carefully monitored while on this medicine. One of the essential points to look out for is whether he is growing normally as Ritalin may reduce his appetite.Other issues are whether the dose can be reduced and importantly whether he can be taken off Ritalin over weekends and holidays.Your son will need a new prescription as well as this only lasts for 6 months.
